Global Movement Fights Against Union Busting and Harassment in Namibia’s Mining Industry

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, May 19 — A global movement has been launched to put an end to the terrorism faced by Namibian labour lawyer Hewat Beukes and to advocate for the reinstatement of nine union leaders at the Rossing uranium mine. This concerning trend of union busting is not limited to one mine but is also prevalent across various mining sites in Namibia. As the campaign gains momentum, activists are rallying support through a petition that calls for immediate action.

The Chinese National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) acquired the Rossing mine in 2019, pledging to uphold labour contracts, laws, and codes in Namibia. However, they have deviated from their commitments, initiating a series of actions that undermine workers’ rights. This includes restricting access to healthcare, attempting to bribe union leaders, and dismissing workers to replace them with outsourced labour. The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) has faced particularly harsh treatment, with the CNNC employing tactics like temporary positions and non-unionized labour to undermine the union’s strength.

The Chinese government’s significant investment in Namibia’s uranium industry has given them control that they are now leveraging to impose labour controls reminiscent of South Africa’s apartheid era. When union leaders voiced their concerns at the Rossing mine, nine branch union leaders were unjustly fired. Since 2020, these leaders have been fighting for their reinstatement, facing tactics aimed at depriving them of their livelihoods and blacklisting them from other employment opportunities.

In addition to the Rossing mine, Beifang Mining Service is also replacing union miners with temporary contract workers. At the Rossing mine alone, 400 miners have been laid off while contract workers are being hired as replacements. This systematic replacement undermines the stability and rights of workers, leaving them vulnerable and at the mercy of exploitative labour practices.

As the situation unfolds, both Namibia’s judicial system and capitalist companies are harassing and intimidating Hewat Beukes, a prominent labour lawyer who has been defending the rights of these miners and other workers across the country. This interference aims to obstruct Beukes from effectively representing unions and advocating for the working people of Namibia, posing a threat to justice and fair labour practices.

Conclusion: The urgent demand to protect Hewat Beukes and the rehiring of the dismissed union leaders at the Rossing mine has gained international attention. The global campaign stands united with the hashtags #HandsOffHewatBeukes, #StopUnionBusting, #RehireRossingMine, and #EndOutsourcing. By signing the petition, individuals express their solidarity and commitment to fighting against the oppressive tactics employed by the CNNC and other entities involved in union busting. It is crucial to stand together to ensure justice and the protection of workers’ rights in Namibia and beyond. – Namibia Daily News

Celebration and Pride: Namibia Recognizes Same-Sex Marriages Following Supreme Court Decision

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, May 19 — In a groundbreaking ruling, the Supreme Court of Namibia has compelled the government to legally recognize same-sex marriages that were concluded outside the country. This landmark decision has been met with jubilation by gay activist and former Mr Gay Namibia, Wendelinus Hamutenya, who took to social media to express his joy and pride. The court’s judgement not only affirms the rights of same-sex couples but also ensures that non-Namibian spouses in these marriages are granted the same residence rights as their opposite-sex counterparts under the Immigration Control Act.

Supreme Court Ruling and Celebration: On Tuesday, the Supreme Court delivered its long-awaited judgement, proclaiming the legal recognition of same-sex marriages in Namibia. Wendelinus Hamutenya, a prominent gay activist and advocate, enthusiastically celebrated this milestone on social media. Emphasizing the significance of the court’s decision, Hamutenya called out those who opposed same-sex marriages, asserting that the Supreme Court ruling had unequivocally favoured the rights of gay individuals in Namibia.

Recognition and Equality: The court’s judgement explicitly stated that the refusal of Namibia’s home affairs ministry to recognize same-sex marriages validly concluded outside the country infringes upon the constitutional rights to equality and dignity. By recognizing the unions of two same-sex couples who were married in South Africa and Germany, the court has taken a major step towards promoting inclusivity and equal treatment. Importantly, the ruling grants non-Namibian partners in these marriages the same spousal recognition and residence rights as those enjoyed by opposite-sex couples.

A Triumph for Human Rights: This momentous decision marks a significant victory for the LGBTQ+ community in Namibia and serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to human rights and equality. By extending legal recognition to same-sex marriages, Namibia joins a growing list of nations that have embraced progress and inclusivity. The ruling affirms the dignity and rights of same-sex couples and paves the way for a more inclusive and accepting society.

Future Implications: The Supreme Court’s judgement not only ensures legal recognition of same-sex marriages but also sets a precedent for further advancements in LGBTQ+ rights in Namibia. It sends a powerful message to the government, urging them to promote inclusivity and equality for all citizens. The ruling also emphasizes the importance of respecting and protecting the constitutional rights of every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Conclusion: The Supreme Court’s ruling to recognize same-sex marriages concluded outside Namibia is a significant milestone in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the country. It represents a triumph for equality, dignity, and human rights. As Namibia takes this crucial step towards inclusivity, it signals a promising future of acceptance and respect for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. – Namibia Daily News

O&L Nexentury Receives Final Permit for Germany’s Largest Floating Solar Plant

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, MAY 17 — O&L Nexentury GmbH, a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List Group, has been granted the advanced water management permit (“gehobene wasserrechtliche Erlaubnis” in German) by the District Administration Office of Karlsruhe, Germany. This permit marks a significant milestone as it allows for the construction and operation of what will be Germany’s largest fully permitted and floating solar photovoltaic (PV) park to date. The solar park will be situated on the gravel lake owned by sand and gravel works company Philipp & Co KG in Bad Schönborn, Germany.

Having obtained the necessary construction permit in February 2023, this 25-year permit paves the way for O&L Nexentury to move forward with the implementation phase of the project. With co-investment from O&L Europe, another subsidiary of the O&L Group, and Philipp & Co KG, the total investment value of the solar project amounts to approximately N$350 million. Construction of the solar park is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2023, with the goal of achieving full operational status by the end of the year.

Encompassing over eight hectares of water surface area (equivalent to approximately eight rugby fields), the solar park will feature more than 27,000 PV panels, resulting in a PV capacity of 15 Megawatts-peak (MWp). This ambitious project aims to supply approximately 70% of Philipp & Co KG’s energy needs, with the excess energy being fed into the local power grid. By implementing this solar system, an estimated reduction of 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year can be achieved.

It is important to note that the solar park will cover only around 15% of the water surface area of the gravel lake. Empirical research conducted on the lake as an artificial body of water confirms that the solar system will not have any adverse effects on the lake’s ecosystem. To ensure safe and sustainable operations, a comprehensive monitoring program will be implemented to assess real-time water conditions, including oxygen and mineral levels.

Steffen Kammerer, Managing Director of O&L Europe and Co-Managing Director of O&L Nexentury expressed his excitement for this pioneering project, stating, “O&L Nexentury has always been committed to innovative and sustainable energy solutions, and we aspire to be leaders in the field of renewable power generation. Given the spatial limitations in Germany and the urgent need for transitioning to renewable energy, there is a demand for innovative solutions that can address these constraints, and artificial bodies of water present an opportunity that does not encroach upon preserved land.”

Kammerer continued, “As an Independent Power Producer (IPP), this project represents an exciting move for our company. While renewable energy generation on artificial bodies of water may currently occupy a relatively small niche, it is a crucial and tailor-made solution for Germany’s transition towards green energy sources.”

He further highlighted the broader benefits, saying, “Making sustainable investments is precisely what we strive to do at O&L Europe, and in this case, sustainable investment in Europe also yields returns for Namibia. The returns from our European projects contribute to the overall success and sustainability of the O&L Group, thereby fostering the growth of the Namibian economy. On an international scale, by supporting Germany’s transition to green energy sources, we are also contributing to the global energy transition. We eagerly anticipate this project and others to come as we continue to develop and implement more solar solutions on artificial bodies of water.”

Sven Thieme, Executive Chairman of O&L, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to witness a Namibian company, our company, making significant strides in the German market. This achievement is a testament to our ability to compete on a global scale and aligns perfectly with our O&L Vision 2025. Diversifying our income streams and strengthening our balance sheet are crucial components of our long-term financial goals, and this accomplishment serves as a significant step towards achieving them. Additionally, it provides a natural foreign exchange currency hedge for our income statement.”

As O&L Nexentury prepares to embark on the construction phase of Germany’s largest floating solar plant, it is evident that this project not only demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability but also showcases the global impact and success of the O&L Group on the international stage. – Namibia Daily News

Askari Metals Makes Major Lithium Discovery at Uis Project in Namibia

NDN Staffer

WINDHOEK, May 17 — Askari Metals, an exploration company, has made significant progress in its lithium exploration efforts at the Uis project in Namibia. Recent drilling campaigns have revealed new lithium-bearing pegmatites with impressive widths of up to 112 meters. The company is now utilizing mapping techniques to identify additional targets for exploration in two unexplored tenements, aiming to gather crucial data for its upcoming exploration phase.

The completion of two phase-one drilling campaigns at EPL 7345 and EPL 8535 has yielded positive results. A total of 59 drill holes were conducted at each prospect, covering a combined distance of 6,540 meters. Additionally, a second phase of drilling at EPL 7345 is nearing completion, with 55 drill holes completed so far, covering 3,367 meters.

According to Johan Lambrechts, the Vice President of Exploration and Geology at Askari Metals, the drilling results have intersected wide pegmatites containing lithium-bearing minerals. The company is eagerly awaiting the assay results from these follow-on phases. The lithium tenor of the results aligns well with the region’s known mineralization, instilling confidence in Askari Metals’ aggressive exploration and development campaign at the Uis Lithium Project.

The second phase of exploration at EPL 7345 resulted in an impressive 112-meter intersection. This phase followed the company’s initial program, which targeted an area previously explored by artisanal miners, who mainly focused on thin, shallow mineralized pegmatites. The ongoing drilling campaign’s outcomes will guide further mapping activities in the area.

Mapping activities at EPL 8535 are expected to continue for the next three months due to the significant size of the prospect, covering 210 square kilometres.

The Uis project operated by Askari Metals spans 308 square kilometres and is situated in a highly mineralized, spodumene-rich pegmatite belt with a history of productive mining and exploration. Many of the pegmatites in the area have been historically mined for tin and semi-precious stones, and visible signs of altered spodumene and lepidolite can be observed within the workings and surrounding rock.

The project is conveniently located less than 5 kilometres from the town of Uis and less than 2.5 kilometres from Andrada’s operational lithium-tin-tantalum mine in west-central Namibia. Andrada’s mine boasts substantial resources, including 81 million tonnes of 0.73% lithium oxide, 0.15% tin, and 0.14% rubidium. The company anticipates expanding its resources to approximately 200 million tonnes, solidifying its position as a world-class lithium producer.

In a significant development, Askari Metals recently secured Canaccord Genuity (Australia) as its strategic capital markets advisor, bringing on board the renowned investment bank with extensive experience in the global lithium sector. The company also secured a $2.5 million strategic equity investment from Huayou International Resources, a global battery materials supply giant. These partnerships and investments are expected to bolster Askari Metals’ lithium exploration activities at the Uis project.

With promising drilling results, strategic partnerships, and a focus on advancing lithium exploration, Askari Metals is positioning itself to become a significant player in the burgeoning lithium sector in Namibia. The company’s efforts hold the potential to contribute to the global supply of lithium, a crucial component in the production of batteries for various industries, including electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. – Namibia Daily News

Burundi-Born Ex-Policeman Aims to Break Barriers as Greece’s First Black MP

Athens, May 17 — In a historic bid to shatter barriers and challenge the status quo, Spiros Richard Hagabimana, a former Burundian policeman, is vying to become Greece’s first black Member of Parliament. His candidacy marks a significant milestone in a country where migrants and individuals from diverse backgrounds rarely hold public office.

Running as a candidate in the southeastern Piraeus II electoral district, representing the conservative New Democracy party, Hagabimana seeks to make a lasting impact in the upcoming elections on May 21st.

“Piraeus is the place where I studied, learned my first Greek words, worked, and live. Through this area, I learned to love Greece,” reads one of Hagabimana’s campaign posters, which he proudly shared on Twitter.

At 54 years old, Hagabimana has had a remarkable journey that has shaped his aspirations. He recounted to the Reuters news agency his experience as a police officer in Burundi, where he was imprisoned in 2015 for refusing to open fire on anti-government protesters. With the assistance of Greek authorities, he was eventually released from jail and returned to Athens in 2016.

Hagabimana’s relationship with Greece dates back to 1991 when he first arrived on a scholarship to study at the Naval Academy. However, due to a military coup in Burundi, he was compelled to seek asylum in Greece. Despite the challenges he faced, Hagabimana persevered and was granted Greek citizenship in 2005. In that same year, he courageously returned to Burundi to participate in peacekeeping efforts under the United Nations.

Hagabimana’s historic campaign is not only significant for Greece but also sends a powerful message about the importance of diversity and representation in politics. By breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes, he paves the way for future generations of individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate actively in shaping the country’s political landscape.

As the election approaches, the eyes of both the local and international community will be on Hagabimana, eager to witness the outcome of his groundbreaking candidacy. Regardless of the result, his bold campaign serves as a catalyst for conversations about inclusion, diversity, and equal representation in Greece and beyond.
