Namibia urges deeper AU-EU cooperation in trade, infrastructure

WINDHOEK, June 3  — Namibia has called for deeper cooperation between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) in infrastructure, industrialization, and skills development to support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Deputy Minister of International Relations and Trade Jenelly Matundu made the remark during the third EU-AU ministerial meeting held recently in Brussels, Belgium, in preparation for the 7th AU-EU Summit scheduled for 2025.

In a statement issued Monday in Windhoek, Matundu said AfCFTA is a historic opportunity for inclusive growth and sustainable development, noting that strengthened collaboration in key sectors is essential to achieving the AU’s Agenda 2063 targets.

EU Ambassador to Namibia Ana Beatriz Martins reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to a partnership based on mutual benefit and highlighted the significance of the 35-year EU-Namibia partnership.

“From sustainable investment to health, peace and education, we are building a partnership of equals that reflects the hopes of our 1.9 billion citizens,” Martins said.

At the meeting in Belgium, ministers from both unions reviewed progress made under the joint vision for 2030, adopted at the 6th AU-EU Summit in 2022, while discussions focused on shared priorities, such as sustainable energy, infrastructure, health systems, education, migration, peace and security, and reform of the multilateral system. Namibia cuts levy on skin, hide exports

WINDHOEK, June 2  — Namibia has reduced its export levy on skins and hides to bolster the country’s vital livestock industry and foster local value-addition.

The move, which went into effect on May 1 but announced by the Ministry of Finance on Monday, was part of Nambia’s broader policy reforms to enhance domestic industrialization, the ministry said.

The export levy on raw skins and hides has been drastically cut to 15 percent, down from 60 percent, Finance Ministry spokesman Wilson Shikoto said in a statement.

The levy on pickled skins has been reduced from 15 percent to 10 percent. “The balanced approach ensures the availability of skins and hides for local value-addition while also allowing producers to export surplus production,” Shikoto said.

The revision is intended to improve market flexibility, support revenue generation for producers, and increase the global competitiveness of Namibia’s livestock products, he said.

“The ministry aims to improve the competitiveness of Namibian livestock products in regional and international markets, enhance market access, and generate employment opportunities in rural and urban areas,” Shikoto said.(Xinhua)

WADA president vows to keep calling out U.S. anti-doping system flaws

WARSAW, May 31  — World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) President Witold Banka vowed on Friday to continue speaking out forcefully about what he sees as serious flaws in the American anti-doping system, following his re-election to a third and final term as head of the global watchdog.

Banka, a former Polish sprinter and Minister of Sport and Tourism, along with China’s former Winter Olympic champion Yang Yang, was re-elected during a virtual Foundation Board meeting on Thursday. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) later, in a social media post, called it the “ultimate ‘bait and switch,’ first promising governance reforms following the Russian anti-doping scandal and then quietly changing the rules the second the world looked away.” On Friday, WADA’s president responded to USADA’s criticism.

“I’m not particularly surprised that such words were said in the USA.” Banka told Polish outlet Sportowe Fakty. “Representatives of this country actually tried to undermine my leadership in WADA and attempted to change the leader.

The American government stopped its contribution to WADA, lost a representative on the board of our institution and ultimately also influence on the elections.” “I’ll continue to speak boldly about the shortcomings of the American anti-doping system,” he added. “Large and highly developed Western countries love to lecture us all.

They love to talk about how the anti-doping system should look, but when we look at their solutions, it turns out that the biggest problem is with them,” he said. “This applies to the US, for example, but also to Germany.

When we had the case of 23 Chinese swimmers, they were the loudest, but they don’t pay attention to how big a problem they have with their own national systems,” Banka explained.

Banka and Yang were originally elected as WADA’s president and vice president at the 2019 World Conference on Doping in Sport. Both will begin their new three-year terms on Jan. 1, 2026, and serve until Dec. 31, 2028. (Xinhua)

Namibia’s forex reserves jump to 3.6 bln USD

WINDHOEK, May 31– Namibia‘s official stock of international reserves saw a significant increase at the end of April, rising by 6.6 percent on a monthly basis to reach 63.6 billion Namibian dollars (about 3.6 billion U.S. dollars), the country’s central bank revealed Friday.

The Bank of Namibia, in the Money and Banking Statistics report, attributed the monthly increase in reserves to the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) receipts.

“This level of international reserves translates into 4.2 months of import cover, whereas the import cover excluding oil exploration and appraisal activities, which are mostly funded from abroad, stood at 5.1 months of import cover,” the central bank said.

While international reserves showed strong growth, the report also highlighted other key economic indicators. The annual growth in private sector credit extension stood at 4.5 percent in April 2025, down from a 5 percent growth rate recorded in March, the report noted.

According to the bank, the overall cash holdings within the banking industry rose, with these balances increasing to an average of 9.9 billion Namibian dollars in April from 9.4 billion Namibian dollars in March, suggesting increased liquidity within the banking system.

The central bank added that headline inflation decreased in April and stood at 3.6 percent, compared to the 4.2 percent recorded in March. (Xinhua)

Namibia launches campaign targeting historic FIFA World Cup qualification

WINDHOEK, May 22  — Namibia has launched an ambitious campaign aimed at qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history.

At a World Cup campaign event Wednesday evening in Windhoek, officials introduced the initiative under the banner of the Brave Warriors, the nickname for Namibia‘s men’s national football team. Speaking on behalf of the newly-appointed Brave Warriors World Cup Campaign Committee, Tim Ekandjo outlined a multi-faceted strategy to rally nationwide support and secure the resources needed for the historic push.

Namibia has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, and achieving qualification would be a remarkable historic achievement not just for the players and the football association but for all Namibians,” Ekandjo said. Ekandjo, who accepted his nomination to the committee alongside other members, said their work had already begun a week before Namibia‘s recent matches in Malawi and South Africa.

The campaign will focus on five key pillars, he said: uniting the nation behind the team; keeping the public engaged and informed about the team’s journey; mobilizing support and funding; incentivizing and qualifying the team; and celebrating qualification. The campaign aims to raise 9.8 million Namibian dollars (548,000 U.S. dollars) to cover appearance fees, winning bonuses and operational expenses.

A gala fundraising dinner is being planned in Windhoek to support that goal. “The objective is to raise at least 2 million Namibia dollars after all expenses are paid. Corporates and individuals will also have an opportunity to do special pledges,” Ekandjo said. Namibia is currently second in Group H of the World Cup’s African qualifying tournament, with 12 points. Tunisia leads the group with 16.

Namibia is scheduled to face Malawi and Sao Tome and Principe in September, followed by matches against Liberia and Tunisia in October. Under the current format, 54 African teams are divided into nine groups, with each group winner qualifying directly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The four best runners-up will enter a playoff to determine one team that will advance to an intercontinental playoff tournament for a potential additional slot.

Namibia must either finish first in Group H to guarantee qualification, or place among the top second-place teams to keep their hopes alive. “Given the teams’ current standings, we can all agree that this is by far Namibia‘s best chance of qualification for the FIFA World Cup, and we must therefore do everything in our power to ensure we win the last four games to stand a chance,” Ekandjo said. Namibia updates biodiversity strategy to align with global framework

WINDHOEK, May 23– Namibia is updating its national biodiversity strategy in line with global targets to strengthen environmental protection, an official said on Thursday.

Speaking at the International Day for Biological Diversity commemoration, Environment, Forestry, and Tourism Minister Indileni Daniel said the new strategy for 2025-2031 is part of Namibia’s commitment to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

“The strategy will guide our efforts to halt biodiversity loss, promote sustainable development, and ensure inclusive participation of marginalized groups, particularly Indigenous people, women, and youth in decision-making processes,” Daniel said. Home to diverse ecosystems, including deserts, wetlands, and forests, Namibia is experiencing pressure from climate change, overexploitation, pollution, and habitat destruction.

The minister said species such as the black rhino and cheetah remain endangered, while marine ecosystems are under stress due to warming waters. Daniel said Namibia’s policy reforms support a green, blue, and circular economy, adding that environmental officers have been deployed across all 14 regions to enforce conservation laws.

The government is also finalizing an action plan to achieve Target 3 of the global biodiversity framework, which calls for protecting 30 percent of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030, she added. Namibia’s biodiversity supports key sectors like tourism and fisheries.

Daniel called on the private sector to adopt biodiversity accounting systems and invest in nature-based solutions. She warned that the continued loss of biodiversity poses risks to human health, including increased chances of disease transmission. (Xinhua)

Xi sends congratulatory letter to 2025 SCO forum on poverty reduction, sustainable development

BEIJING, May 21  — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday sent a congratulatory letter to the 2025 SCO (the Shanghai Cooperation Organization) Forum on Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development, held in Xi’an, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.

Xi pointed out that poverty eradication, a global issue, is a common goal of all countries in the world.

Through arduous efforts, China has successfully won the battle against poverty, achieved the poverty reduction target of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development ten years ahead of schedule, blazed a poverty reduction path with Chinese characteristics, and written a new chapter in the history of mankind’s fight against poverty, Xi said.

Stressing that the root cause of poverty is inadequate development, Xi said the SCO has actively carried out cooperation on poverty reduction and sustainable development in recent years, achieving remarkable results.

As the rotating chair of the SCO, China is willing to continuously enhance policy communication with all parties, share poverty reduction experience, deepen practical cooperation, help more countries explore poverty reduction and sustainable development paths that suit their national conditions, and join hands to build a beautiful world free from poverty and with common prosperity, Xi noted.

The forum opened in Xi’an on Tuesday under the theme of “Sustained Poverty Reduction and Cooperative Development: Advancing Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development among SCO Countries.” The forum was co-hosted by the SCO Committee on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation and the People’s Government of Shaanxi Province. Namibia to host Southern Africa’s top netball club championship

WINDHOEK, May 21– Namibia will host the Confederations of Southern Africa Netball Associations Club Championship from May 22 to 26, bringing together top netball clubs from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The tournament will take place in the country’s capital, Windhoek.

This significant event marks another milestone for Namibian netball, following its successful hosting of the Africa Netball Cup in Swakopmund in December 2024. In an interview with Xinhua on Tuesday, Netball Namibia‘s Vice President Connie Samaria said the country’s readiness and ability to host international competitions have been well-proven.

“As a national federation, we have proven to Africa and the world Namibia‘s readiness and ability to host international competitions,” Samaria told Xinhua. “Hence, we have the required systems in place to pull this upcoming championship off,” he added. Samaria said hosting the championship will contribute to growth and development in several ways.

“Exposure to higher levels of competition (will be beneficial), as Namibian clubs will have the rare opportunity to level up to champions of other countries in SADC.

This will sharpen players’ tactical understanding and technical skills and elevate performance standards. Hosting this event further boosts national pride and netball popularity as a sports code in the country,” he said. The championship will feature a strong lineup of clubs from various SADC nations.

Pool A includes Namibia‘s Wanderers Netball Club and Namibia Correctional Services NC, alongside Botswana’s Maun Heroes NC and Jwaneng NC, Zimbabwe’s Makate High Flyers, and Eswatini’s Royal Flames.

Pool B will see Namibia‘s Namibian Navy NC and Mighty Gunners NC, Botswana’s BDF Cats NC, Lesotho’s Lesotho Correctional Services NC, and Zimbabwe’s ZDF Queens NC. (Xinhua)
