Namibia to play Ghana in November

WINDHOEK, 10 OCT  – The national men’s senior football team, the Brave Warriors will take on West African football giants Ghana in the fifth edition of the Dr Hage Geingob Football Cup slated for 24 November here.
The competition, which was won by Namibia during its fourth edition in 2017, was officially launched in Windhoek on Wednesday.
During its three editions, the tournament was contested by football clubs from Namibia, South Africa and Angola with Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa winning it on the first three occasions.
The cup changed its format to national team football in 2017, with the host country taking on Zimbabwe and emerging 3-1 victors.
Speaking during the launch on behalf of one of the main sponsors, Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL), Ian Stevenson said supporting local sports is their way of supporting great sportsmen and women in Namibia.
“Apart from NBL’s passion for sport and its commitment to contributing to uplifting sports in the country, the Dr Hage Geingob Cup provides young athletes with an opportunity of making football their profession and in so doing providing for their families,” he said.
Stevenson added that the football cup also enhances relationships between African countries and promotes future tourism opportunities to Namibia.
“Local vendors are able to sell food and beverages while hotel accommodation and overall economy in Namibia is boosted,” he said.
Speaking at the same occasion, another key sponsor Mobile Telecommunications Limited, through its Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer, Tim Ekandjo, said they take pride and joy in supporting sports development in the country.
“Our sponsorship is testimony to how passionate we are towards the Namibian people, in particular their love for football as the number one sport in the country.”
