World Food Day to be commemorated in Kavango West

RUNDU, 10 OCT  – Kavango West Regional Governor, Sirkka Ausiku said she is happy that her region has been accorded the opportunity to host this year’s commemoration of World Food Day.
In an interview with Nampa on Wednesday, Ausiku said she received communication from the Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF), Alpheus !Naruseb that her region will host this year’s commemoration, an opportunity she is jubilant about.
Although traditionally commemorated on 16 October annually, this year’s edition of World Food Day will be commemorated on 30 October at Bunya village in the Kapoko Constituency.
It will be held under the theme ‘Our actions are our future. A #Zero Hunger world by 2030 is possible’.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) committee of ministers of agriculture and food security held a meeting in Swaziland in May last year, where they approved to roll-out a model for the regional World Food Day commemoration to be hosted by countries designated as SADC Chair.
The governor said she is happy that her region has been selected to host the 2018 World Food Day commemoration that is elevated to SADC level and she is expecting participation of some SADC countries.
She said although not everyone will be able to make it on the actual day of the event, it is important to remind all Namibians about the importance of food security at household level and that no Namibian should die of hunger as said by Head of State, Hage Geingob.
“The event is happening at the time [when] we are preparing our fields for cultivation. Therefore, let’s all prepare our fields. In our region we are doing it under Operation Katemo,” said Ausiku.
Operation Katemo is an initiative by the Kavango West Region to complement the Dry Land Crop Production programme implemented by MAWF.
