WINDHOEK, 03 DEC – A Windhoek resident accused of murdering a four-year-old boy in 2015 after rumours surfaced that he was not the child’s biological father, on Monday denied committing the offence.
Simon Muno Reeves Dawid entered a not guilty plea to a charge of murder at the start of his murder trial before High Court Judge Nate Ndauendapo.
The 46-year-old Dawid did, however, not provide a statement in respect of the basis of his not guilty plea and defence, and is now challenging the prosecution to prove the veracity of every allegation against him contained in the charge sheet.
He entered his not guilty plea as per the instructions he gave his Legal Aid-funded defence lawyer Mbanga Siyomuinji in court on Monday.
Dawid is accused of intentionally killing Athanosius Katholo Reeves Simbo on 05 July 2015 by hitting the child against a concrete wall at a house in Mika Shimbuli Street in Katutura.
The State alleges that when the boy was born on 20 August 2010, Dawid and the child’s biological mother, Stella Fatima Simbo, were in a romantic relationship and she told the accused he was the child’s father.
Their relationship ended in 2012 and the child remained in Dawid’s care.
Rumours, however, started to surface in the community that he was not the boy’s biological father. Subsequent to the child’s death, DNA test results also confirmed that he was in fact not the biological father.
Dawid is free on warning.
State Advocate Cliff Lutibezi is appearing for the prosecution.
