RUNDU, 27 MAR – The Kavango West Under-20 regional team coach has said his players are ready to compete for top honours at the upcoming The Namibian Newspaper Cup.
The 18th edition of the Newspaper Cup, which will include netball for the first time, is slated for Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region from Friday to Monday.
In an interview with Nampa on Monday, Josef Mpareke said the aim is to win games.
“This time around we are not just going to participate, our aim is to at least come out of the group stages and go to the semi-finals,” said Mpareke.
Kavango West has since its debut in the competition in 2015 not managed to make it through the group stages yet, but Mpareke said that will be “a thing of the past.”
He further said the players have been preparing well, adding that they were in camp and worked on goal-scoring tactics.
As part of their preparations, the team played a number of friendly matches against several teams in Rundu. They also got to compete on a grass turf and under floodlights since Nkurenkuru does not have a proper football pitch.
Kavango West has been drawn against Khomas, Otjozondjupa and Kunene in Group A.
Group B consists of Zambezi, Erongo, Omaheke and Omusati, while Group C comprises Oshikoto, Oshana and Hardap.
Kavango East, //Kharas and Ohangwena were drawn in Group D.
