RUNDU, 07 JUNE – The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Kavango West Region has embarked on a campaign to strengthen its efforts in fighting crime, especially illegal hunting, in the region.
NamPol Kavango West Regional Commander, Commissioner Josephat Abel said this in a statement availed to the media on Tuesday.
The Public Awareness Campaign on Crime Prevention and Law Enforcement, the regional commander said, is to enlighten the community on the importance and preservation of wild animals and to interrupt crime and wildlife related crimes committed within the region.
Abel said the Kavango West Region will continue strengthening its efforts in effective crime prevention and law enforcement through coordination and integrating a cluster of activities. These include strong and effective presence of police forces on the ground and dedicated investigation units that will focus on criminal syndicates and organised crimes.
He added that the campaign will also be in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Namibian Defence Force, Ministry of Justice, Intelligence Services, communities and farmers.
However, in order to make sure that the campaign becomes a success, Abel noted that together with the regional management of the MET, they have come up with a strategic approach for community policing and stakeholders’ engagement, especially decision makers such as the traditional authorities.
“The police are no longer the sole guardians of law and order but all members of the community must become active allies in the effort to enhance the safety and quality of our regional wildlife management and the entire environment,” stressed the commander.
Such a constructive partnership, Abel emphasised, will require energy, creativity, understanding and patience.
When Nampa contacted him for further clarity on the awareness campaign on Tuesday, Abel said the campaign was necessitated by increased cases of illegal hunting occurring in the region lately.
He concluded by condemning all activities of illegal hunting and related crimes and warned those involved to refrain from such activities with immediate effect or risk being caught and facing the wrath of the law.
