Head-on collision kills four on Mariental-Keetmanshoop road

REHOBOTH, 07 JUNE – A horrific head-on collision between a bus and a double cab bakkie claimed the lives of two men and two women on Wednesday on the B1 national road between Mariental and Keetmanshoop.
The accident happened three kilometres north of Asab between 15h30 and 15h45, Namibian Police Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Hardap Region, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay told Nampa on Wednesday.
“It is alleged that the driver of a Marcopolo bus, which had about 35 contract workers of a Rosh Pinah mine on board, lost control after the right front tyre burst. The bus went over to the other lane and collided head-on with a Nissan Hardbody Double Cab, killing all four occupants,” Clay said.
He said the impact was so severe that the pickup was cut in two pieces and the bodies of the four deceased badly damaged.
“The bus left the road after the impact and landed on its side. Some passengers of the bus were rushed to the Mariental State Hospital with injuries and some were treated on the scene for shock,” he said.
Clay said the next of kin of the deceased were not informed of their passing as yet and that the police were still on the scene to clear the road by Wednesday evening.
Investigations into the incident continue.
