WINDHOEK, Aug. 24 – On the 30th August, President Hage Geingob will launch two climate action projects that will be implemented in Namibia from 2017 – 2022.
The projects, financed through a grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) will be administered by the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia as a Green Climate Fund accredited entity, and executed by Namibian line Ministries, civil society and targeted institutions, for the benefit of people living in areas susceptible to the impacts of climate change.
The first project is the ‘Climate Resilient Agriculture in 3 Vulnerable Extreme northern crop-growing regions (CRAVE)’, and is scheduled for implementation in the Zambezi, Kavango-East and Kavango-West Regions. The five-year project focuses on the reducing climate vulnerability, increasing the adaptive capacity and resilience of vulnerable small-scale farming communities in the vulnerable extreme northern crop production landscapes that are threatened by climate variability and change.
An amount of US$9.5 million was approved to implement this project, and in addition, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry will provide in-kind contribution amounting to US$500,000 during the implementation period.
The second project is the ‘Empower to Adapt: Creating Climate Change Resilient Livelihoods through CBNRM in Namibia’, which is another five-year project targeted at empowering rural community-based natural resources management (CBNRM) communities to respond to climate change in terms of awareness, adaptive capacity and low-carbon rural development.
The envisaged project essentially establishes ‘a pot of grant funding’ exclusively earmarked for investment in Namibia’s CBNRM programme through communal area conservancies and community forests. The project is expected to increase the resilience towards climate change of at least 76,000 beneficiaries and improve management on communal conservancy lands of 7,200,000 hectares. The total investment from the Green Climate Fund for this project is US$ 10 million. – Ronald Geingob
