WINDHOEK, 09 JUL – Auditor General Junias Kandjeke has said failure by the Erongo Regional Council to implement a disaster recovery and business continuity plan is unjustifiable, urging them to prepare the two plans to be approved by management. The council’s audit report for the financial year ended 2017 reveals that failure to implement a recovery and continuity plan negatively impacts operations and could lead to financial losses in the event if any disaster occurs.
In the report tabled last week in the National Assembly by Deputy Minister of Finance Natangwe Ithete, Kandjeke said this matter was also reported in the management letter in the previous year’s audit.
The report further reveals that a vehicle purchased in 2016 was damaged a month after its procurement, but was recorded in the financial books by its cost price and not the revaluation price.
“A vehicle with registration number GRN 81712, acquired by the council on 13 September 2016 was damaged in an accident a month after its acquisition, but was still recognised at its cost price of N.dollars 598 116 instead of its revaluation price at the end of the financial year,” Kandjeke stated.
He said failure to record the damaged vehicle at its true revaluation price will create misleading figures in the financial statements.
“The council should ensure that the damaged vehicle is disclosed at its revalued market price to reflect its fair value in the financial statements.”
Additionally, the report reveals a profit surplus of about N.dollars 20.5 million during the year under review.
It outlines that the council generated a revenue of N.dollars 134 million from various ministries such as gender, education, land reform, information, as well as the sponsorship of private organisations, the works directorate and Erongo emergency fund.
