WINDHOEK, 09 Apr – Civics Football Club assistant coach, Donnelly Nell said their 0-1 defeat to African Stars Friday night leaves them in an uncomfortable spot on the log standing.
Civics, who won the NPL three times in the past, are on the verge of being relegated to the First Division if their fortunes do not change in their remaining four matches.
The Khomasdal-based outfit is currently 13th on the log of 16 teams, with 28 points from 26 games played thus far. They are just one point away from Young Chiefs, who are 14th on the log with 27 points.
At the end of the 2017/18 season, three clubs will be relegated to make way for three clubs from the three different First Division streams.
Nell said at the moment, he is scared of what is going to happen as it reminds him of a season when the club survived relegation on the last day of the league.
“I hope we will not get into the same scenario as that season. I am positive that we will not be relegated because the coach will be back from his national duties to take over the team,” he said.
Head coach Brian Isaacs was in Zimbabwe with the senior national women’s football team that played Zimbabwe in the Confederation of African Football Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Nell added that the club has players who can do the job, but he is unsure of their mental state of fighting relegation.
The Civilians, as the club is also known, will have to collect at least six or nine points in their remaining fixtures to avoid Young Chiefs or Rundu Chiefs from overtaking them if those two clubs win all their remaining games.
Civics’ remaining league games will be against Tigers on 14 April; Tura Magic on 15 April; Blue Waters on 05; and Eleven Arrows on 06 May.
