WINDHOEK, 15 JUN – An appeal by Groot Aub resident Gregory Kangandjera, who is serving a 45-year custodial sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, is finally set to begin in the High Court here at the end of next month.
He was in September 2016 incarcerated for 45 years for murdering Loretta Kruger on 18 November 2010 at Groot Aub, south of Windhoek.
Kangandjera, 41, made another appearance in the High Court on Friday during a pre-trial conference of case management review and was informed that his appeal hearing will kick-off before High Court Judge Nate Ndauendapo on 26 July 2018.
The date for the appeal hearing was decided upon in an agreement reached by Kangandjera’s government-funded defence lawyer Trevor Brockerhoff and State Advocate Palmer Khumalo in court on Friday.
Kangandjera was given a copy of the transcript of his case in preparation for his appeal bid.
On 01 July 2016, he was found guilty by Judge Ndauendapo on a charge of murder with direct intent to kill, attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice as well as assault.
In his judgement, Ndauendapo found that Kangandjera intentionally killed Kruger by strangling her to death with his bare hands a few days after he accused her of cheating on him with a man he saw in her company at a shebeen in Groot Aub.
On 13 November 2010, Kangandjera found Kruger in the company of a certain Ipuleni Natangwe at a bar.
He assaulted Natangwe and later left the shebeen with Kruger.
From 13 to 18 November 2010, also severely assaulted Kruger by kicking her, beating and hitting her.
He had also refused to allow her to obtain medical assistance for the injuries she sustained, before strangling her to death on 18 November 2010.
Kangandjera then staged a suicide and told the police at the settlement that Kruger had committed suicide by hanging herself.
However, police investigations found that he did all this with the intention of defeating or obstructing the course of justice, while he was fully aware that Kruger died as a result of strangulation.
Kangandjera is serving his sentence at Windhoek Central Correctional Facility.
