All roads lead to Kamanjab for Baraks Five Cup

REHOBOTH, 29 JUN  – The annual Baraks Five Cup takes place at Kamanjab in the Kunene Region this weekend.
The tournament, named after the late former principal of Kamanjab Combined School Abraham Baraks Mbarandonga, was started in 2016 by the wife of the late football lover and sees teams from surrounding areas compote in football and netball.
Chief organiser of the tournament, Ama Getze Thourob told Nampa on Thursday Christabella Mbarandonga and the couple’s children decided to honour their late husband and father with the annual tournament.
“Baraks liked football so much and was involved in all sorts of activities, so his wife decided to host the event for his legacy to continue,” Thourob said.
Mbarandonga was also principal of Braunfels Agricultural School in the Khorixas district from 1994 to 2004.
Last year the annual Baraks Five Cup was won by Imcor Chiefs from Uis.
The tournament amount is N.dollars 40 000 – N.dollars 30 000 for the football category and N.dollars 10 000 for netball.
The football winners will receive N.dollars 15 000, with the runner-up getting N.dollars 9 000.
The semi-final losers will each get N.dollars 3 000.
Registration per team is N.dollars 3 000.
In the netball category, the winner receives N.dollars 5 000, while the final losers will walk away with N.dollars 3 000. The third-placed team will get N.dollars 2 000 for their efforts.
The registration fee per netball team is N.dollars 1 200.
The draw will be held on Friday at the Kamanjab Community Hall and teams have been asked to avail at least two representatives for the draw.
Thourob said all teams are invited to be part of the event to bring football festivities to rural communities.
“The rural communities are deprived of football activities most of the time and we thank the sponsors for this event. Everyone from all corners of Namibia is invited,” Thourob said.
