WINDHOEK, 14 APR – Amateur boxer Jonas Junias won Commonwealth gold after beating Thomas Blumenfeld from Canada in the final on Saturday morning in Queensland, Australia.
The 64-kilogramme boxer outclassed Blumenfeld from round one to three to win gold for Namibia.
Jonas used his height, physique and strength to keep his opponent at bay, which won him all rounds on points.
He added another Commonwealth medal to his collection after winning silver at the 2014 event.
His gold puts the country on the medal standing for the first time since the start of the championships on 04 April.
All Namibian athletes are now done with their competitions, bowing with only one medal on the penultimate day of the games.
Host nation Australia currently top the log with 179 medals of which 70 are gold, 53 silver and 56 bronze.
South Africa is the only African country in the top five with 13 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze medals.
Jonas reached the final after beating Rashield Williams of Bahamas in the Round of 32, Valentin Kondakov of Samoa in the Round of 16, Dinindu Ponnawela Vidanalage Don of Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals and Luke McCormack of England in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Namibia’s cyclists also competed on Saturday.
Vera Adrian and Michelle Vorster finished 15th and 21st respectively in the women’s road race, while Tristan de Lange, Dan Craven and Drikus Coetzee finished the men’s road race in 36th, 40th and 44th positions.
Martin Freyer could not complete the 168.3-kilometre route.
Namibia competed in athletics, bowls, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, Para-sports and triathlon.
