OTAVI, SEPT. 7 – Namibia’s energy sources seem to have an extended input after a 5 MegaWatt Solar plant was on Friday commissioned by Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo.
The plant – based at Ohorongo Cement’s factory area at Farm Sargberg near Otavi in the Otjozondjupa region -might possibly highlight a step forward in reducing foreign reliance on energy.
Minister Alweendo reiterated that all Namibians deserved access to electricity in all corners of the country, especially remote areas.
There has been a notion that Namibia faces inequalities with regards to electricity, and that the disparity meant that some schools enjoy access to electricity, while some don’t, and Alweendo said: “It’s time that we address this inequalities.”
Ohorongo Cement Managing Director Mr. Hans – Shuttle said , “Ohorongo Cement as a proudly Namibian company supports government policies such as growth at home strategies, Vision 2030 and Harambe Prosperity Plan.”
Ms Johanna Shuungula from SunEQ , a company that constructed the Solar PV plant which will supply power to Ohorongo Cement said, ”the partnership with Ohorongo Cement and SunEQ dates back in 2015 when SunEQ was awarded the right to develop, construct and operate a Solar PV Plant after a transparent procurement process was carried out.”
Ms Shilunga also said that 90% of the total investment cost of N$102 Million was raised locally in Namibia.
Mr Shuttle and Ms Shilunga both paid tribute to stakeholders in the project.
“Stakeholders in the project are development Bank of Namibia, IJG, Old Mutual Investments Namibia and CDH. With this Solar PV plant which will now supply electricity to Ohorongo Cement, the company will not only cut cost of 5MW of on-grid electricity, but it will also contribute towards Namibia’ s efforts to reduce imports and assist to reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions from electricity generated using fossil fuels.
A New Foundation
Ohorongo Cement also took the time to unveil their new cement packaging bag.
Over 40 Cement bags were handed over to the Minister of Mine and Energy Tom Alweendo, which the Minister will donate to a charity organization of his choice. The Cement was produced using the Solar PV plant electricity.
Ohorongo Cement ‘s Public relations officer Mrs Esther Mbathera explained that the Solar PV plant owned by SunEQ was constructed to exclusively supply Ohorongo Cement with solar energy as the sole consumer. – mrobert@namibiadailynews.info
