KEETMANSHOOP, 06 JUL – The Directorate of Education, Arts and Culture in the //Kharas Region hosted its 14th //Kharas Annual Regional Science Fair in Keetmanshoop this week.
Twenty-six schools from the //Kharas Region and Northern Cape in South Africa are participating in the science fair, which started Wednesday and ends Friday.
A total of 135 science projects are being showcased.
Speaking at the official opening on Thursday, Skorpion Zinc’s Manager of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Nora Ndopu said the mine remains committed to offering multiple opportunities to young people to engage in science exploration and experiences through events such as the science fair.
“This exercise will give the participants a basis for seeing patterns, forming theories, considering alternate explanations and building knowledge,” she said.
Skorpion Zinc is the main sponsor of the science fair.
Ndopu further said science can change the future and the future lies in the hands of aspiring young people.
“Young people like you, young people who can innovate, cooperate with others and stay resilient will be able to rise up to the challenges and make our earth a better place,” she said.
In a statement delivered on his behalf, //Kharas Education Director, /Awebahe //Hoeseb urged the learners to “know themselves” in order to conduct honest introspection, which would help them discover their strengths and weaknesses.
//Hoeseb also encouraged the learners who might go home empty-handed after the science fair.
“Develop positive self-esteem and set realistic goals and aspirations. Make sure that the challenges you want to tackle are reasonable and that there is a window of opportunity that you will surmount those challenges and submit a masterpiece project in 2019,” he said.
The prize giving ceremony will take place on Friday.
