JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 23 — Four people have died and one remains missing after heavy rains battered parts of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Province over the weekend, the provincial government said in a statement on Monday.
The storms triggered widespread flooding across coastal areas, including Margate and Port Shepstone, causing extensive damage to homes, roads, and other infrastructure, said the statement.
According to the statement, a 63-year-old woman died in a mudslide in Bomela in the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality, while a 46-year-old man drowned in floodwaters in Qholoqholo in the Umzumbe Local Municipality.
Two men were killed after a vehicle was swept away at a low-lying bridge in Amanzimtoti in eThekwini, with one person still missing.
KZN Premier Thami Ntuli urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant, warning that more rainfall is forecast in parts of the province.
“The provincial government is mobilizing all available resources to assist affected communities and ensure that urgent relief reaches those in need,” he said. (Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
