Woman arrested for culpable homicide

REHOBOTH, 16 SEP  – The 45-year-old Rehoboth woman arrested Saturday after she was thought to have run over a man, faces a new charge of defeating the ends of justice after investigations revealed she was not the driver of the vehicle.

The Namibian Police Force’s crime investigations coordinator for Hardap, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay on Sunday said during the investigations, the police found that it was in fact her 16-year-old son who had been driving the vehicle that hit the 56-year-old Gerhard van Rooi.

“It is alleged that the woman had been covering up for her son who was in fact the driver of the vehicle that hit the deceased. He was driving without a valid driver’s licence,” Clay said.
Nampa earlier reported that the woman lost control over the Toyota Yaris she was driving before it left the gravel road and hit Van Rooi, who was walking next to the road.

He was rushed to the St. Mary’s Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
The woman thus faces a charge of defeating the ends of justice, while her son is charged with culpable homicide and driving a motor vehicle without a driver’s licence.
