WINDHOEK, 26 JUL – The Windhoek Correctional Facility (WCF) received 20 computers from the Namibia Literacy Trust (NLT) here on Wednesday.
The computers will be used in the education division for inmates’ accelerated learning in functional literacy education, computer literacy studies, processing of assignments and research amongst others.
WCF Assistant Commissioner, Robert Kalonda said learning through pen and paper, especially in the computer literacy programmes, is time-consuming and some inmates might complete their sentences earlier than the specified time of the course.
“The donated computers will prepare inmates with necessary skills needed in the outside world in a shorter time before their sentencing is done,” Kalonda said.
He expects all inmates to use the equipment effectively and be able to become technicians and computer programme developers after the completion of their sentences.
The donated computers will also be used in submitting the necessary documents of the incarcerated learners via internet when applying for tertiary education.
NLT Manager, Michael Jimmy advised the beneficiaries to appreciate the education they are getting as not everyone has such a privilege.
“Namibia needs people who are computer literate and inmates are very fortunate to get courses while in prison,” Jimmy said.
Namibia Literacy Trust is an independent civil society organisation that aims to help reduce illiteracy in Namibia and has been donating educational equipment to different Namibian correctional facilities over the years.
