WINDHOEK, 20 JUN – The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) did not blindly accept the 157 Huawei MediaPad M3 Lite devices for parliamentarians from China’s Huawei; it took into consideration relevant security issues associated with the brand.
This was the response from Information Minister, Stanley Simataa to Nampa on Tuesday, when quizzed about the spy-linked Huawei devices that are now being used by local parliamentarians.
The questions stem from international reports that the Chinese government is using Huawei’s tech devices, such as mobile phones and tablets to spy on politicians and prominent people in foreign countries.
Asked whether MICT was aware of the alleged security threats posed by Huawei and its ties with the Chinese government, Simataa replied: “As a Government, we are not naïve to security issues inherent in such matters, regardless of the providers from which they are procured.”
When asked if Members of Parliament (MPs) can be assured that sensitive information they may keep on the devices is safe and secure, Simataa replied: “In today’s cyber security-infested environment, the security of information of the beneficiaries is of paramount importance.”
Last week, Huawei donated the 157 devices to the tune of N.dollars 700 000 to MPs as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to the information and communication technology sector.
Members of both houses, the National Assembly (NA) and National Council (NC), each received a brand-new tablet, while the staff offices in both houses each received five tablets.
The tablets, according to Simataa, are part of Parliament’s drive to operate digitally and virtually in a bid to improve its efficiency in executing its legislative duties.
“We will be able to save on costs related to printing of materials distributed to Parliament and enable MPs to operate virtually for as long as there is connectivity,” Simataa told Nampa last week.
Local telecommunication company, Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) provided the MPs with sim cards.
However, the tablets have been received with mixed feelings, with some calling on Simataa to deliver a statement clarifying all cyber security threats associated with Huawei.
Popular Democratic Movement’s Parliamentarian, Nico Smit is one such politician.
“I have read the international reports that Huawei is being used to spy on people. I am waiting for the minister to pronounce himself on the devices as I don’t want to pre-empt things,” said Smit.
For now, Smit said he will continue using his private iPad and iPhone, both devices from American-based company, Apple, which he has trust in.
