WALVIS BAY, 17 SEP – Walvis Bay residents held a mass prayer against gender-based violence on Saturday.
The prayer session follows the brutal murder and mutilation of nine-year-old Cheryl Avihe Ujaha in Windhoek.
She was reported missing on 26 August 2018 and her mutilated remains were found three days later. No arrests have been made in connection with the murder yet.
The town’s Deputy Mayor, Penelope Martin, who was also present on Saturday, condemned the abuse of women and children.
“We as the community of Walvis Bay need to stand together and play an active role in identifying violent activities in our society, no matter how minor they may appear,” she said.
She further called on Government, the private sector and communities countrywide to replicate this initiative in all regions and to pray “until a breakthrough is experienced.”
“Combating crime, whatever manner it manifests itself in, should not only be seen as Government’s responsibility, but as a societal responsibility. Let us hold hands, unite and report criminal activities, as well as any suspicious behaviour, to the nearest law enforcement centres,” Martin said.
The deputy mayor further called for collaborations between civil society and organisations with experience in dealing with gender-based violence and related issues, to provide help for community members who need it most.
Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhardt Esau and Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua also took part in the prayer session. – NAMPA
