GENEVA, May 7 — The UN human rights office said Tuesday it is alarmed that the military escalation in Hama and Idlib provinces in Syria has put hundreds of thousands of displaced people who have lived there for years in “serious danger.”
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said at a UN briefing here that the military escalation has been ongoing since April 29.
“Those fleeing the hostilities are at high risk and continue to face serious protection concerns along the way,” said Shamdasani.
She said a volatile situation might be created that may provoke further violence and displacement.
“The intensification of the violence has already taken a heavy toll on civilians,” said the UN spokesperson.
She said that according to information gathered by the UN Human Rights Office, at least 27 civilians had been killed and 31 injured since April 29 including many women and children.
The intensified military offensive has further resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of people who were repeatedly displaced and had to move further north towards northern and eastern rural Idlib, and north and western rural Aleppo seeking safety, said the UN office. – XINHUA
