Two culpable homicide cases under investigation in Otjozondjupa

OTJIWARONGO, 16 OCT  – The police in the Otjozondjupa Region have launched investigations into cases involving the deaths of two men in separate incidents on roads in the region.
One man is suspected to have died in a hit and run incident on Sunday on the Grootfontein-Otavi main road, while the other died after the vehicle he was travelling in overturned the same night.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force in the region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha on Tuesday told Nampa in an interview that the lifeless body of 22-year-old Mently Gairiseb was found alongside the road around 21h00.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that Gairiseb was walking at the time and hit and killed by a vehicle some three kilometres northeast of Otavi by an unknown motorist who fled the scene.
“We have not arrested anyone yet linked to this incident,” said Mbeha.
She said the close relatives of the deceased have been informed of his death.
In the other incident, an adult man identified as Mbala Sichombe died after a BMW sedan he was travelling in left the road and rolled several times on the B1 road between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja.
Sichombe, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died on the spot and his next of kin have been informed.
Mbeha said the accident occurred about 22h45 some 76 kilometres north of Okahandja.
So far, the Okahandja police have opened a culpable homicide docket against the 32-year-old driver who allegedly lost control over the vehicle.
The driver survived and was treated for a leg injury at the Okahandja State Hospital.
Police investigations in both matters continue.
