KEETMANSHOOP, 27 MAY – Chief of the Kai-||Khaun Nama clan, Petrus Kooper on Friday said the Germans must pay for the damage they caused the Nama, Herero and other communities during colonial times.
The chief was speaking at the official opening of the Nama Cultural Festival in Keetmanshoop, which was attended by huge numbers of people from Namibia, South Africa and Botswana.
Kooper said “the people in this country never invited Germany to come here and neither did they ask to be colonised by the Germans”.
He continued: “More than a century ago, and for highly dubious reasons, Germany decided to bring its force and nationals to Namibia. The worst thing that happened was the 1904-1908 genocide committed by the uninvited and unwanted Germans against the people of this country.”
He said many Nama, Herero and others were killed “like flies by the unwanted Germans and their dead bodies were scattered all over Namibia”.
He added that “women were imprisoned and raped in the presence of their husbands and others forced to scrape and skin the skulls of their husbands”.
Many of the communities were driven into the Kalahari Desert where they died of hunger and thirst and some were dumped in concentration camps, said Kooper.
The chief further encouraged those at the festival to become more involved in genocide talks, attending conferences and going abroad as the Herero community does.
“I call on you as the Nama-speaking community, wherever you are, to turn up in big numbers as you did now, whenever you are invited to genocide talks, to attend conferences as our Herero-speaking compatriots are doing and go abroad in big numbers.” The two communities are currently challenging the German government for reparations in a New York court.
He reiterated that the Nama and Herero communities must maintain their stance of ‘nothing about us without us; anything about us without us is against us’.
Kooper said should German chancellor, Angela Merkel apologise to the Namibian Parliament only and leave out the descendants of the victim communities, it will be a failure.
“The Namibian Government is not the victim communities, nor was there a parliament in 1904-1908. Therefore, nobody else but ourselves shall define the package of reparation for the losses that our ancestors and we have suffered and continue to suffer.”
