DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 6 — Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has chaired a special meeting of the Central Committee of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party in the capital, Dodoma, according to a statement issued after the meeting.
Hassan, who serves as CCM chairperson, on Wednesday led the session that, among other matters, endorsed the party’s nominees for speaker and deputy speaker of the National Assembly, said the statement.
Officials said the meeting forms part of preparations ahead of the opening of the 13th parliament, scheduled to convene next week.
During the first sittings, newly elected members of parliament will be sworn in, followed by the election of the speaker of the National Assembly, and the nomination and parliamentary approval of the prime minister.
Wednesday’s session marked the first CCM Central Committee meeting President Hassan has chaired since she was elected for her second term.
She was sworn into office in Dodoma on Nov. 3 in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice George Masaju after being declared the winner of the Oct. 29 general elections.
Hassan won the race with 97.66 percent of the vote, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission. Now the country’s first elected female president, Hassan served as vice president from 2015 to 2021 and first assumed the presidency in March 2021 following the death of then-President John Magufuli from heart disease.
