ARUSHA, Tanzania, Feb. 15 — Tanzania on Tuesday announced the
second round of an operation against illegal fishing and smuggling of fish
and its related products in Lake Victoria.
Tanzania’s Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Luhaga Mpina made the
announcement in the lake-zone city of Mwanza when speaking during an
evaluation meeting on the just-ended operation code-named “Operation
Sangara” in Lake Victoria, which started in January this year. The
government is well prepared to make illegal fishing a story of the past in
Lake Victoria. The water body is being shared by three east African
countries — Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. The minister suspended 35 civil
servants of the fisheries department for allegedly engaging and colluding
with illegal fishermen in their respective areas. He also directed the
revocation of 26 beach management unit committees in Lake Zone for their
alleged role in illegal fishing activities.
According to Mpina, the first round of the operation found that some key
leaders, politicians, councils’ chairmen, local government leaders were
involved in illegal fishing and fish smuggling. “We will continue
maintaining the operations until illegal fishing and smuggling of fish
resources in the lake is curbed once and for all,” he said. Mpina reminded
leaders of all levels to live their oaths as public servants by observing
