JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 11 — More than two weeks since his abduction, the whereabouts of a South African man kidnapped in Burkina Faso were still unknown, even though the search for him continued, an official said Thursday.
South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mabaya said that the government was in touch with the family of the kidnapped man.
“The government was informed of the kidnapping of a South African national in Burkina Faso. The government through the South African missions in that region is working with law enforcement agencies to attend to the situation,” he said.
The South African man was reported to have been abducted together with an Indian national in northern parts of the country.
It was reported that the kidnapped man worked at a gold mine in a town called Djibo bordering Niger and Mali. This was not the first kidnapping accident targeting foreign nationals in that region.
Mabaya appealed to citizens to be vigilant at all time when traveling overseas, urging them to alert the department of their travel plans.
“Government urges all South Africans to be alert as they travel and to be sensitive to possible security challenges in areas they are visiting or working,” Mabaya said.
“South Africans also are reminded to register with the mission or with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation when working or traveling abroad.” – XINHUA
