KEETMANSHOOP, 16 SEP – The Swapo Party’s regional coordinator for //Kharas, Matheus Mumbala has appealed to the newly appointed national leaders assigned to the region to commit themselves to party affairs here.
Mumbala was speaking at a meeting which took place at Swapo’s //Kharas head office in Keetmanshoop on Saturday, where the party’s leadership in the region was officially informed of the appointment of the newly assigned leaders and introduced to the party’s executive director, Austin Samupwa.
The national leaders assigned to the region are Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhardt Esau as chairperson; Minister of Health and Social Services, Bernard Haufiku; Deputy Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero; Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration, Maureen Hinda and Member of Parliament Eliphas Ndingara.
They were assigned on 25 August in Rundu by the party’s political bureau.
“This region is vast and it requires a committed, dedicated team that will be able to assist and mobilise human and financial resources in order to increase the party membership and maintain Swapo’s dominance in all seven districts and nine local authorities,” he said.
He said for the past six years their activities were determined by collective decisions taken by the national leaders assigned to the region and the party’s regional structures and this is something they want to maintain.
“I am appealing to you, through the chairperson, to commit yourself to our affairs,” he added.
Mumbala further said the region is doing well, but party members face a few challenges.
“These include emerging political parties that initially misled our members by claiming to be addressing land matters and the well-being of our people and they are now confirmed to have applied to the Electoral Commission of Namibia to be a political party,” he said.
He was referring to the Landless People’s Movement, which has filed an application with the Electoral Commission of Namibia to be registered as a political party.
Mumbala said Swapo needs to intensify education among its members “in order for them to remain vigilant and resist such temptations.”
“I do not want to crucify anybody as a leader as some of those movements were formed under the pretext that they wanted to address the land questions, which I believe all of us are in need of. If there are still comrades who share their sentiment it is their democratic right, however, our party constitution does not allow members to have dual membership,” he said. – NAMPA
