SWAKOPMUND, 16 OCT – As part of its efforts to push for youth development, the Swakopmund Town Council has included the development of sports infrastructure of all sports facilities in the town, in its 2018/19 capital projects.
Swakopmund Municipality’s Manager of Projects, Ronei Cloete at a recent meeting revealed that this will include the resurfacing of the netball fields in the DRC and Hanganeni informal settlements as well as the upgrading of the ablution facilities at Mondesa.
Additionally, she said a gym has been constructed at the multipurpose centre in Mondesa, which will also be furnished with all the necessary training equipment.
“This is to promote and build a healthy community, promote sport and recreation and keep unemployed and out-of-school youth busy and prevent them from getting involved in disorderly activities,” Cloete stressed.
She pointed out that as part of youth development, the council also aims to uplift the interests of young people at the coastal town and made provision for career guidance and employment counselling activities, in an attempt to address the increasing unemployment rate among the youth.
“Council also aim to promote self-employment and entrepreneurship as well as conduct job preparation and job search activities,” she added.
The promotion of local economic development by devising strategies that are aimed at enhancing business growth, retaining and attracting investment and developing the tourism sector, are other areas that the town council will be working on.
“The council has therefore been encouraging strategies that are supporting business growth in Swakopmund through developing infrastructures and facilities such as business stall, open markets and capacity building,” Cloete noted.
