WINDHOEK, 28 MAY – Swapo youth members orchestrated a march here on Monday to appeal to the United Nations (UN) to implement the people of Western Sahara’s self-determination and independence rights.
Their petition was submitted through the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation.
“Our petition is guided by a collective sense of commitment and duty to the notion of universal human rights,” reads the petition dated 28 May 2018.
Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) member, Meryam Nghidipo told Nampa the protest coincides with the State visit of President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Brahim Ghali to Namibia.
Ghali arrived on Sunday upon invitation by Geingob and is expected to leave Namibia on Tuesday.
The petition said the Kingdom of Morocco has been delaying the referendum on Western Sahara since 1991 and for that reason the group wished to reaffirm the position of the Namibian Government.
“We wish to reaffirm the position of the Namibian Government in ensuring that the people of Western Sahara enjoy their right to self-determination and independence,” said Nghidipo.
She called upon the UN to implement the resolutions to ensure that the Sahrawi people exercise their rights from the Kingdom of Morocco without further delays.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah accepted the petition and commended the youth for supporting the government’s position, assuring that it will be maintained.
Western Sahara was denied self-determination rights since 1975 following Morocco’s occupation of their territory and the UN have been trying to implement these rights for decades.
