REHOBOTH, 18 JUN – Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) Football Club were on Sunday relegated to Khomas Second Division after only one season in the Southern Stream First Division (SSFD).
The rookies went down after a 3-3 draw with Rebels FC at SKW Stadium and only collected 5 points from a possible 30 from ten matches in the SSFD Inland Stream.
The team needed six points from the weekend Rounds 8 and 9 matches to have any hope of survival, but lost 5-2 against eternal rivals Ramblers in the ‘German derby’ on Saturday, before being held by Rebels on Sunday.
SKW FC captain, Horacio Rietz told Nampa on Monday that they will not lie down but will aim to pick up the pieces.
“We now need to pick ourselves up from the disappointment, rebuild and hopefully be back soon. It was a very nice and humbling experience for all of us,” Rietz noted, adding that despite their relegation, football was the true winner.
In other Inland matches played over the weekend, Try Again FC held log leaders Young Brazilians to a goalless draw at the J. Stephanus Stadium in Keetmanshoop on Saturday, while at Windhoek’s Sam Nujoma Stadium, Rebels salvaged a much-needed point to stay in the SSFD after playing to a goalless draw against second placed Windhoek United.
On Sunday, Windhoek United defeated Ramblers 1-0 at the Ramblers Stadium in Windhoek.
The race for the title in the Inland Stream is down to the wire with both log leaders Young Brazilians and second placed Windhoek United tied on 17 points with Brazilians having scored eight goals more than United, with the former having two games remaining and the latter having one.
In third place is Ramblers with 11 points, Try Again in fourth with nine points and Rebels also on nine points but are separated by goal difference with sixth place going to the relegated SKW.
The winner from Inland Stream will contest in play-off match against Coastal Stream winners for a berth in the Namibian Premier League, while the teams ending in sixth place will automatically be relegated to the respective regional second divisions.
