WINDHOEK, 22 APR (NAMPA) – Namibia Premier League (NPL) outfits on Saturday made no mistake in the Debmarine Namibia Cup as they booked themselves spots in the quarter final.
Windhoek and the coastal town of Walvis Bay played host to the Round of 16 matches.
Out of the 10 Premier League teams that featured in the Round of 16; seven booked themselves spots in the quarter-finals which will be played next weekend at a venue still to be decided.
African Stars routed Otjozondjupa second division qualifiers Dynamos 6-0 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium and Arrows beat another Premier League outfit, Orlando Pirates 4-3 on penalties after a two-all draw at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay.
UNAM beat fellow Premier League side Chief Santos, 4-0 in the last match that was played at Windhoek’s Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.
Black Africa booked their place in the next round after a hard-fought match against Second Division side Khuse from the Oshana Region. The two teams drew one-all after 90 minutes of football, but Black Africa ended up winning the match 2-0 on a penalty shootout.
Golden Bees are the only non-Premier League outfit that booked themselves a place in the quarter-finals after they beat Khomas NamPol 4-3 on penalties after their game ended goalless.
Blue Waters booked themselves a spot in the next round of the competition when they eliminated NPL relegation-threatened Young Chiefs from Oshakati 2-1, also in Walvis Bay.
Tura Magic, who reached the semi-finals in the Debmarine Namibia Cup’s maiden season, booked a spot in the quarter-finals after beating Swakopmund Football Club 9-1.
Meanwhile Civics humbled Once Again 10-1 for a top eight spot.
The quarter-finals draw will now see African Stars face Eleven Arrows, while UNAM lock horns with Blue Waters; Tura Magic go up against Civics and Black Africa will face Golden Bees.
The winner of the quarter-finals will advance to the semi-finals over the weekend of 12 to 13 May, with the winners meeting in the final on 26 May 2018.
The overall winners of the competition will take home N$ 500 000, while the losing finalist will get N$ 250 000. The two losing semi-finalists will each get N$150 000.
