WINDHOEK, 31 JULY – Southern African Development Community (SADC) Industrialisation Week provides a platform for intensifying of partnerships between policymakers, the private sector and other stakeholders and promotion of the region’s industrialisation strategy at national and regional level.
This is according to Minister of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development, Tjekero Tweya, who was speaking at the official opening of the event in Windhoek on Monday.
About 150 manufacturers and exhibitors from the SADC region are exhibiting their products and services during industrialisation week, which ends Wednesday.
It is being held under the theme ‘Promoting infrastructure development and youth empowerment for sustainable development’.
Tweya said in March 2016, the SADC Council of Ministers agreed that the Industrialisation Week be held annually as a regional public-private engagement platform aimed at fostering new opportunities for intra-regional trade and investment.
He said platforms of such nature enable companies operating in various industries to display their latest products and services, as well as to learn about the activities of other businesses, examine market trends and identify business opportunities.
“It is worth noting that exhibitions are very important events that bring producers and suppliers of goods and services, as well as potential customers together to provide the necessary exposure and opportunities for sales and business linkages,” Tweya added.
In 2015, there were calls for the private sector to play a role in helping SADC achieve its industrialisation strategy.
The strategy was developed as an inclusive long-term plan for modernisation and economic transformation that should enable substantial and sustained economic development to raise living standards.
It is against this background that industrialisation week was devised in 2016.
The first industrialisation week was held in eSwatini (then Swaziland) in 2016, while the second took place in South Africa last year.
