Russia reports over 11,000 new cases in 24 hrs

   BEIJING, May 7 -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

   MOSCOW -- Russia has reported a new daily record of 11,231 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, taking the total to 177,160 as of Thursday, the country's coronavirus response center said in a statement.
   The death toll from the pandemic increased by 88 to 1,625, while 23,803 people have recovered, including 2,476 over the last 24 hours, the statement said.

   BERLIN -- New infections with COVID-19 in Germany picked up slightly again but were well under peak times as the number of confirmed cases increased by 1,284 within one day to 166,091, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Thursday.
   Last week, between 680 and 1,600 new daily cases had been reported to the RKI. At the height of the pandemic in Germany, more than 6,000 new COVID-19 infections had been recorded by the RKI, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention, on a single day.

   TOKYO -- Some schools in Japan that had temporarily closed amid a nationwide effort to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic opened their doors to students on Thursday.
   The reopening of the schools came despite the nationwide state of emergency being extended through the end of May by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

   OTTAWA -- As Canada continues to lift restrictions on businesses and services, two of the largest provinces still face a crisis in COVID-19 outbreaks in long-term care homes.
   "The epidemic itself is decelerating," Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, said at her daily news conference on Wednesday. "But unfortunately and tragically, what's happening right now is that ... with so many long-term care facilities affected, I think that the number of deaths will continue to increase."

   JAKARTA -- Indonesia has officially postponed the BCA Super League Triathlon Bali 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Antara news agency reported here on Thursday.
   The event was previously scheduled to take place from June 13 to 14 in the country's resort island of Bali, said the organizing committee, that has yet to determine the new schedule for the international championship.

   BEIJING -- Chinese authorities on Thursday urged efforts to summarize and promote effective practices in regular epidemic prevention and control.
   The instruction was given at a meeting of the leading group of China's COVID-19 epidemic response, which was chaired by Premier Li Keqiang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. Xinhua
