Rundu residents take part in national clean-up

RUNDU, 25 MAY  – Large numbers of Rundu residents rolled up their sleeves to take part in the national clean-up campaign Friday morning.
Rundu’s Mayor, Verna Sinimbo was amongst the residents cleaning up along with Kavango East Governor, Samuel Mbambo; Swapo Party Secretary-General Sophia Shaningwa and the Councillor of Rundu Urban, Vicky Kauma.
Sinimbo said people should not just clean because of the national clean-up, but have to make keeping a clean environment part of their culture and should not litter everywhere as has become habit.
This will help to keep Rundu free from dirt, the mayor said.
“I think the time has come for us to think differently and to try to keep our town clean. If Rundu is clean, then we can say Namibia is clean because some of these towns are strategic towns,” said Sinimbo.
She also expressed the hope that the clean-up will not be a one-off event and said a big clean-up should in fact be held at Rundu every month.
She further applauded First National Bank Namibia for donating 10 drums to the council that will be used as garbage bins along Maria Mwengere Road and appealed to the business community to also do their part since they contributed to some of the waste around the town.
Kauma concurred with the mayor and also expressed hope that a monthly clean-up will become the norm. She appealed to people residing in the Kehemu residential area to keep their surroundings clean.
“I will discuss with my fellow councillors what we can do to keep the town clean,” she said.
