Oshakati, 21 October – Let’s keep Namibia clean, let’s keep our road reserves clean and let’s stay number one.
This is according to Chief Executive Officer of Road Authority Conrad Lutombi who said the national roads have become dumping for refuse, which is not acceptable.
In mid-September, Minister of Works and Transport John Mutorwa launched a national cleaning campaign with the aim of ensuring that Namibians maintain a litter-free environment and clean road reserve.
This will also ensure that prospective investors and tourists are attracted.
“We appeal to our road users that whenever they have rubbish or plastic they must put it in a bin along the road when they see one. Our people will collect it,” he said.
He emphasised that Namibians enjoy the top spot when it comes to roads, but if they are not taken care of, they will put off tourists and investors from coming to the country.
He said the local authorities have a responsibility to provide dumping sites in their jurisdictions.
Local councils should also provide the needed services where settlements are established.
Lutombi added that it is not the responsibility of Road Authority to clean the roads, but to ensure that grass and unwanted materials are removed from the road, for motorists’ safety.
The campaign that was launched in Rundu, Zambezi and now Ohangwena, runs from September to November.
