Investing in the Future: Opportunities for Chinese and Namibian Businesses to Collaborate

In an increasingly interconnected global marketplace, the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships between Chinese and Namibian businesses is ripe for exploration. Recent initiatives, particularly outlined in Namibia’s National Development Plan 6 (NDP6), echo a strong desire for the country to leverage its rich natural resources by adding value locally, thereby creating employment and stimulating economic growth. This vision aligns perfectly with the capabilities and expertise that Chinese firms can bring to the table.

Namibia is blessed with an abundance of minerals, fisheries, and agricultural potential. However, much of this wealth remains underutilized. Collaborating with Chinese businesses, known for their technological advancements and manufacturing capabilities, presents a unique opportunity to revolutionize how Namibia processes and adds value to its resources. For instance, partnerships could focus on sectors such as agro-processing, mining technology, and renewable energy, which are pivotal in achieving Namibia’s goals for economic self-sufficiency and job creation.

Moreover, Chinese companies are increasingly looking to diversify their investment portfolios and are interested in sustainable projects that promise long-term dividends. Collaborating with Namibian businesses not only enables them to access unique resources but also helps in fulfilling their social responsibility goals, helping to uplift local communities by providing training and development in specialized fields.

Ultimately, the collaboration between Chinese and Namibian businesses represents a win-win scenario. By empowering local industries and capitalizing on shared expertise, both countries can foster an environment of growth, innovation, and sustainability. This partnership can help Namibia not only capitalize on its natural assets but also pave the way for a prosperous future where all stakeholders—local businesses, workers, and international investors—thrive together. Investing in this collaborative future is not just beneficial; it is essential for achieving sustainable development and economic resilience in Namibia-

Capricorn Foundation renews partnership with Response Action-Based Organisation

The Capricorn Foundation has donated a further N$300,000to the Response Action Based Organisation (RABO), reaffirming its long-standing commitment to the organisation. RABO is a non-profit organisation that plays a vital role in frontline, community-based responses to gender-based violence (GBV), suicide attempts, child abuse, and neglect. As a first responder, RABO transports victims to hospitals, police stations, or social workers, depending on the case and facilitates referrals for long-term support.

Veripura Muukua, Head of the Capricorn Foundation, said, “As part of its Vulnerability Focus Area, the Capricorn Foundation is a long-term partner of the Response Action Based Organisation. We are proud of our partnership with RABO and that, through our collective effort, we can make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable by providing basic needs, supporting victims of gender-based violence and abuse, and holding community engagements and events on social issues.”

In addition to the recent donation, RABO hosted an interactive workshop for the Khomas-based officers on 23 July 2025, sponsored by the Capricorn Foundation. The workshop was facilitated by Ms. Selma Nangonya, Senior Social Worker from the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ms. Clemencia Kavita, Senior Social Worker from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Social Welfare, and Chief Inspector Simaho, Head of Gender-Based Violence Victim Sub-Division.

The session brought together 75 members of Khomas NamPol for a peer learning and capacity-building experience focused on enhancing their support to victims of GBV, rape, and child abuse. The Namibian Police Force plays a critical and often challenging role in responding to social issues, frequently serving as the first point of contact for victims. This workshop was one of many initiatives that aim to support officers in continuously strengthening their response skills in an ever-evolving environment.

“Workshops like these offer a valuable opportunity to strengthen inter-agency collaboration, share practical tools, and affirm a joint commitment to the safety and dignity of all Namibians. We are grateful to the Capricorn Foundation for partnering with RABO on this initiative and for their continued support. The Capricorn Foundation has been essential in helping us reach many families, victims, and children. Although they cannot help everyone in need, they work hard to stretch their funds to assist as many people as possible, not just in Khomas but also in other areas. We are very thankful for their support”, said, Zackary Itodo, RABO Facilitator.

The Capricorn Foundation is a Section 21 Company and a registered welfare organisation in Namibia (W.O 499). Established by Capricorn Group in February 2020, the Foundation serves as the main administrator of the Group’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes and initiatives. The Foundation extends its gratitude to Bank Windhoek, Capricorn Asset Management, and Entrepo for their continued support in funding these life-changing initiatives.

WFP concludes 9-month emergency drought relief operation in Namibia

WINDHOEK, July 28 — The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has said that it had concluded a nine-month emergency drought relief operation in Namibia, supporting more than 63,000 vulnerable people affected by El Nino-induced drought.

Funded by a 3-million-U.S.-dollar contribution from the United Nations (UN) Central Emergency Response Fund, the initiative was carried out in partnership with the government of Namibia, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), covering three regions between October 2024 and June 2025.

The relief operation included food assistance through vouchers, hot meals for children, health screenings, and gender-based violence support services, the WFP said in a statement released on Thursday.

WFP Country Representative Naouar Labidi said the response went beyond food delivery, also strengthening local capacities and contributing to economic recovery.

Approximately 41,000 people received three rounds of food vouchers to purchase maize meal, canned fish, and cooking oil from 25 participating retailers, Labidi said, adding that the initiative helped meet immediate food needs while supporting local businesses and supply chains.

According to Labidi, more than 22,000 children received daily meals from 155 soup kitchens, while UNICEF conducted health screenings for over 83,500 people, identifying and referring malnourished children for treatment.

The UNFPA reached over 22,400 people with mobile outreach services focused on sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence, Labidi said.

Furthermore, the agency reiterated its commitment to working with the Namibian government and partners to strengthen food systems, enhance emergency preparedness, and build resilience against future climate-related shocks. (Xinhua)

Namibia thrashes UAE in Rugby World Cup play-off

KAMPALA, July 28– Namibia defeated the United Arab Emirates to qualify for the final stage/repechage qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

After failing to qualify for the World Cup automatically following a defeat to Zimbabwe in the Rugby Africa Cup, Namibia dominated UAE 86-29 in the Asia/Africa play-off at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.

The Asian side took the lead after only three minutes through Emosi Vecanaua’s try, with Max Johnson scoring the conversion to give the UAE a 7-0 lead.

But Namibia fought back with a quick transition to pull back a try by Jurgen Meyer. Andre van der Berg missed the conversion, while Johnson made no mistake scoring a penalty for UAE to take its lead to 10-5 after 10 minutes.

Namibia later ran riot, with a try from Richard Hardwick and three more by Torsten van Jaarsveld seeing them take a 39-22 halftime lead.

Moments before the break, the UAE’s Matthew Mills was yellow carded and sin binned. In the second half, Namibia continued to run rings around the UAE with high levels of dominance.

Aston Mukwilongo and Danie van der Merwe scored two tries apiece, while Armand Combrinck and Max Katjijeko also got their names on the scoresheet for Namibia, who survived a period with 14 men after a player was sin binned.

UAE fly-half Johnson told Xinhua that his side had failed to perform well against a strong opposition. “We lost to a good side,” rued Johnson.

Namibia, which has played at every Rugby World Cup since 1999, will now play in the final qualification tournament in Dubai this November.

This will take the format of a four-team round robin also featuring Belgium and two teams yet to be decided, with the winning team qualifying for the 2027 World Cup. (Xinhua)

Metropolitan Turns the Page on Printing Challenges for Chief Hosea Kutako Primary

Staff Reporter

Aminus, 28 July —  Metropolitan Namibia has once again demonstrated its strong commitment to community upliftment and educational development by donating a much-needed photocopy machine to Chief Hosea Kutako Primary School in the Omaheke Region.

Valued at N$ 57,000, this photocopy machine represents a significant investment in the school’s infrastructure and the future of its learners.

For the past three years, the school, located in the Aminus Constituency and serving 542 pupils with a dedicated staff of 20 teachers, has operated without a printer. Educators had to travel five kilometres to neighbouring schools to perform essential printing tasks for both administrative and academic purposes. The newly donated photocopy machine is expected to considerably enhance teaching efficiency and access to resources.

Learners of Chief Hosea Kutako Primary School share a joyful moment during the official handover of a new photocopy machine, joined by Metropolitan Sales Manager Mr. Denias Hangula.

During the official handover ceremony, Mr. T.S. Mbiriona, the Principal of Chief Hosea Kutako Primary School, expressed his gratitude:

“This donation comes at the perfect time. It will not only ease the workload for teachers but will also enable more effective lesson preparation, directly benefiting our learners.”

In his remarks on behalf of Metropolitan Namibia, Mr. Denias Hangula, Sales Manager, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to supporting inclusive and quality education:

“At Metropolitan, we believe that progress is possible when we respond to real needs and contribute in ways that make a lasting difference. This handover is not just about a machine; it is about standing with communities, walking alongside those who make a difference, and ensuring that no learner is left behind.”

The event was attended by esteemed dignitaries, including Honourable Pijoo Nganate, Governor of the Omaheke Region, who reaffirmed the collective responsibility in driving educational success:

“Delivering quality education is not a task for government alone. It requires all of us, corporate partners, civil society, and individuals, to work together,” said the Governor during his keynote address.

Councillor Honourable Peter Kazongominja of the Aminuis Constituency was represented by Ms. Kandando.

Also present were members of the school board, educators, and community members. The programme featured vibrant performances by local cultural groups, Onderera and Outjina, showcasing the pride and spirit of the occasion.

This initiative by Metropolitan Namibia reflects the organisation’s broader mission to extend its impact beyond financial products by directly investing in educational empowerment and community well-being. As Hangula stated:

“Let us continue to build a Namibia where every learner has a fair chance, where teachers are supported, and where no one is left behind. Together we can.”

By John K WaDisho

Windhoek, 24 July —  In a pivotal meeting, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia engaged with H.E. Malik Agar Nganyoufa Eyre, Special Envoy and Vice President of Sudan, to discuss critical socio-economic issues facing Africa.

The President emphasized the need for the continent to prioritize socio-economic transformation in alignment with Agenda 2063, which aims for a prosperous and integrated Africa.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed her concerns regarding the sluggish progress of the “Silencing the Guns” initiative — a campaign designed to end conflicts and prevent genocides in Africa.

She highlighted the interdependence of peace and socio-economic development, noting that without lasting peace, the continent’s aspirations for prosperity remain unattainable.

During the meeting, Envoy Eyre provided updates on the dire situation in Sudan, where unarmed citizens have been tragically killed amid ongoing violence.

This reflects the urgent need for effective dialogue and action to restore peace and security. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to ensure that the socio-economic future of Africa is built on the bedrock of peace – Namibia Daily News

Namibia unveils upgraded banknotes, coins

WINDHOEK, July 24  — Namibia’s central bank has unveiled the country’s upgraded banknotes and new coinage series featuring enhanced security measures and updated designs.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah presided over the unveiling ceremony Wednesday evening.

The event coincided with the official celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the Bank of Namibia (BoN), which was themed “Anchored in Stability: 35 years of central banking excellence and innovation.”

The upgrade represents the first change to Namibia’s coins since their introduction in 1993 and the first update to its banknotes since 2012.

“Change is, therefore, long overdue, because technological advances have progressed, and Namibia must stay on par with the rest of the world,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

She highlighted the alignment of the banknotes and coins with international best practices through adjustments to their sizes and materials.

“I encourage all Namibians to familiarize themselves with the new features and to embrace this milestone with pride and shared responsibility,” the president said. “It is a living symbol of our unity, resilience, and aspirations.”

The new banknote and coin family consists of five banknotes and five coins.

BoN Governor Johannes Gawaxab told the launch that the coins are lighter, smaller, and more durable, making everyday transactions easier and more efficient.

“Instead of depicting Namibia’s fauna and flora, the new coins now symbolically represent the five key sectors that anchor Namibia’s economy,” he said.

The central bank said the new currency series will officially enter circulation in August, alongside the current series, to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

“To support the public in recognizing and adapting to the new features, the bank will be conducting a comprehensive, countrywide awareness campaign,” Gawaxab said. (Xinhua)

Cricket Namibia’s VP appointed to Africa Cricket Association Board

WINDHOEK, July 23  — Cricket Namibia‘s Vice President, Polly Negongo, has been elected to the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) Board, Cricket Namibia announced on Wednesday.

The ACA serves as the continental coordinating body for cricket in Africa, operating under the auspices of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“It’s time for African cricket nations to come together and strengthen the brand of cricket across the continent. We’ve made strides, but Africa can go much further. Together, we’ll be a stronger force,” Negongo said in a statement.

Negongo emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for Africa and highlighted that Namibia‘s focus remains on developing cricket, giving players exposure, and growing the game in rural and developing communities.

“The only way to improve is to give our players the right platforms, and that starts with unity, structure, and shared vision,” he said.

Looking to the future, Negongo envisions a more commercially vibrant cricketing ecosystem across Africa, where he wants to see African players competing in global cricket leagues and, ultimately, to establish professional African leagues that attract international talent.

Meanwhile, Negongo’s appointment marks a significant milestone not only for Cricket Namibia but for the broader African cricket community. (Xinhua)

Namibia’s fund granted access to 20 mln USD to tackle climate challenges

WINDHOEK, July 23 — Namibia’s Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) will now be able to access up to 370 million Namibian dollars (about 21 million U.S. dollars) from the Adaptation Fund, following their accreditation as a national implementing entity (NIE), the EIF announced Wednesday.

“This accreditation is a testament to EIF’s strong governance and commitment to impactful climate solutions,” said EIF Chief Executive Officer Benedict Libanda.

“It opens doors to deliver innovative projects that address the real challenges faced by our people and ecosystems.” According to Libanda, the EIF is already developing a series of transformative projects to enhance climate resilience across Namibia’s communities and key economic sectors.

These initiatives, designed in close consultation with government ministries, regional authorities, civil society, and local communities, are aligned with national development and climate adaptation priorities, according to authorities.

They include strengthening resettlement farms by improving infrastructure, ensuring reliable water access, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and developing market linkages to establish long-term sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable communities.

“These projects are being refined to ensure alignment with Namibia’s Nationally Determined Contributions,” he said.

Libanda noted that as an accredited NIE, the EIF will serve as a key national conduit for Adaptation Fund resources, reducing reliance on multilateral intermediaries and fostering a more efficient, country-driven approach to climate adaptation.

“To maximize impact, EIF will soon launch an Adaptation Project Pipeline Development Strategy, engaging national stakeholders and international partners to deliver on Namibia’s climate goals,” he concluded. (Xinhua)
