WINDHOEK, 01 NOV – The continuation of the trial of a former hostel caretaker at a school in Otjiwarongo, who was charged with the rape of 10 boys, was on Thursday put on hold until mid-November this year.
Mervin Nguyapeua stands accused of raping the boys between 2013 and 2015.
The continuation of the trial was on Thursday postponed to 16 November in order to allow the learners time to finish writing their final examinations of the year before they give evidence on behalf of the prosecution.
The postponement of the case was effected as per an agreement reached by Nguyapeua’s Legal Aid-funded defence lawyer, Milton Engelbrecht and State Advocate Seredine Jacobs in court.
On 20 June 2018, the accused denied committing the offences when he entered not guilty pleas to 32 charges of rape and 27 alternative charges of committing sexual acts involving 10 boys younger than 16 years while employed as caretaker at the hostel of Karundu Primary School.
The 49-year-old Nguyapeua did not disclose anything in respect of his pleas to the charges, and challenged the prosecution to prove every element contained in the charges against him.
State witness Anna Amalama Timoteus, a teacher at the school, in her evidence before court gave detailed information about the boys who approached her about the former hostel caretaker’s behaviour.
A case of sexual molestation was opened against the former hostel caretaker at the Otjiwarongo Police Station in March 2016 and the accused was arrested shortly afterwards.
Nguyapeua remains in custody at the Windhoek Central Correctional Facility’s trial-awaiting section, where he has been held since his arrest with no option to post bail.
High Court Judge Alfred Siboleka is presiding over the trial.
