WINDHOEK, 09 JUL – The Otjinoko netball and Fire Eyes football teams won the finals of the Omaheke Top 8 tournament in Gobabis on Sunday.
Otjinoko defeated Okombomi by 38 goals to 31 and took home N. dollars 5 000 and the trophy, after beating Red Fire in the second semi-final by 28 to 16 points.
In the first netball semi-final match, Okombomi defeated Kajalami by 39 goals to 19.
Otjinoko’s team captain Tataa Kauami expressed gratitude to her teammates and supporters for their commitment throughout the competition.
“It was very cold and the supporters were coming in numbers and that motivated us as well,’’ she said.
The Okombomi ladies pocketed N.dollars 2 500 as runners up, while Kajalami and Red Fire each took home N.dollars 1 200 for coming in third place.
Fire Eyes pocketed N. dollars 10 000 as final winners in the football category, while Oslek took home N.dollars 5 000 as runners up.
Fire Eyes captain Tjinge Kapundjiri thanked the organisers of the tournament, saying it contributes to the development of sports in the region.
“As a premier league player, I am happy to see young players shining in this competition as it will open doors for them as well,” he said.
The defending champion Okaoveni and Otjinoko each took home N.dollars 2 500 as semi-final losers.
Each of the Omaheke Region’s seven constituencies is expected to send eight teams to the competition, but this year only four constituencies took part with 44 teams registered.
The tournament started on Saturday and ended Sunday.
