WINDHOEK, 21 SEP – The Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) has criticised the Swapo Party Elders Council (SPEC) of diffusing the need for clarity on ancestral land during discussions at the upcoming second National Land Conference.
“The land conference, if it is to be relevant, must be predicated on the quest for clarity on ancestral land and no amount of prevarications will do the trick,” OTA Chief of Staff, Bob Kandetu said in a media statement issued Thursday.
In its document named ‘The standpoints of the Swapo Party Elders’ Council (SPEC) on the land reform and agrarian reform issues in Namibia’, the elders stated that the issue of ancestral land should not be supported, as it just promotes discontent among people.
The OTA further suggest that it should be discussed against the background of national economic development as the Namibian economy depends on land resources utilised for the benefits of the country through agriculture and mining.
“All human beings have a natural right to land and its products. It is worth mentioning that Namibians have a constitutional right to be resettled anywhere in Namibia and integrate with other people as long as procedures are followed,” the statement said.
This, according to Kandetu, will go a long way in fanning the already fuelled tensions among some communities.
Kandetu further said the government is also to be blamed for the fuelled tensions as it has not played open cards with those Namibians who had lost ancestral land and who patiently held onto the shorter end of the stick for the better part of the last 28 years of Namibia’s independence.
“Which people will really be done harm to by the inclusion of a discussion on ancestral land on a national agenda that the land conference is,” Kandetu wanted to know.
The conference will take place from 01 to 05 October in Windhoek
