OSHAKATI, 29 APR – The Oshakati Totem Expo 2018 fundraising gala dinner held here on Saturday raised over N.dollars 1 million for the hosting of the showpiece scheduled to take place between 25 May and 02 June this year.
The funds were raised through pledges and the selling of 35 gala dinner tables at N.dollars 5 000 each.
Standard Bank Namibia, as the main sponsor of the event this year, contributed the highest amount of N.dollars 150 000 at the event.
Sahala Investment contributed the second highest amount of N.dollars 100 000, followed by Fysal Fresh Produce and Rani Group of Companies with N.dollars 50 000 each.
The Oshakati Town Council is hosting its Totem Expo for the seventh consecutive year, since its inception in 2012.
The event showcases clan identities, while also accommodating corporate companies that wish to exhibit their services and products.
In a speech delivered on his behalf during the gala dinner, Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba said the expo aims to promote the identity of people in Namibia and to strengthen ties among various cultural communities in the country.
Mbumba believes the expo strengthens the mantra of unity in diversity and promoting the principle of a truly united Namibian house.
“We should proudly embrace our cultural norms, morals, ethics and traditions in a healthy way, which is not at the expense of or denigrating other cultures,” Mbumba urged.
With culture and modernity, Mbumba said, people of Namibia should only incorporate the virtues and the progressive elements while identifying and discouraging the inappropriate elements such as tribalism, child marriages, female circumcision, alcoholism, drug abuse and crime.
The dinner was also attended by Clemens Kashuupulwa, Governor of the Oshana Region, where Oshakati is located.
