KATIMA MULILO, 30 MAR – Khomas and Kavango West shared the spoils in a goalless draw in the first opening football match of The Namibian Newspaper Cup at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex on Friday.
Khomas dominated proceedings, but it was Kavango West who came closest to scoring what would have turned out to be a stunning wining goal.
Pitsi Ameb and Vaino Ugwaanga controlled the tempo from midfield for Khomas with their neat interplay and through balls for lively forwards Lionel Routh, Godwin Eiseb and Arnold Kardom.
That dominance failed to yield clear chances though as Kavango’s hard-running attacker Eriyona Mbundu stung the palms of Khomas keeper Ro-Giono Goagoseb with a rasping drive from range midway through the first half.
Eiseb responded with a mazy run and low shot which forced Kavango West goal-minder Sitefanus Ihemba into a sprawling save at his near post.
While both teams displayed great endeavour in the second half, clear scoring chances remained at a premium with both defences on top of their game.
With time running out, Manfred Haidongo came close to winning the match for Kavango when his snap shot from the edge of the box cannoned off the upright, with Goagoseb well beaten.
In the end, the sides shared the spoils and missed the chance to steal a march in Group A.
Mastriano Kohima from Khomas scooped the man of the match award.
