REHOBOTH, 18 SEP – The 45-year-old Rehoboth woman arrested on Saturday after she was thought to have run over a man, and her 16-year-old son made their first appearance at the Rehoboth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Sophia Nickel, as second accused facing a charge of obstructing the course of justice and her son, the first accused, name withheld due to him being a minor, facing charges of culpable homicide and driving without a valid driver’s license, appeared before Magistrate Andre Matulich.
It is alleged that the woman had been covering up for her son who was in fact the driver of the vehicle that hit 56-year-old Gerhard van Rooi in Rehoboth.
It was earlier reported that the woman lost control over the Toyota Yaris she was driving before it left the gravel road and hit the man who was walking next to the road.
He was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital but succumbed to injuries sustained in the incident.
Nickel was released on bail of N.dollars 1 500, while her son was released into her care and they are due to appear on Tuesday for legal aid application.
Public prosecutor Victor Mutumbulwa represented the State.
