TSES, 25 SEP – Chairperson of the National Council (NC), Margaret Mensah-Williams on Monday said it is unacceptable that 28 years after independence, people still use bushes when nature calls.
She was speaking at a meeting at Tses in the //Kharas Region as part of the NC’s outreach programme 2018 held under the theme ‘Strengthening Parliament democracy through public participation’.
The outreach is aimed at engaging the regional and local political leadership and the general public on various topics of national importance amongst others.
She said: “It is not acceptable to live in an unhygienic place, it is not right, it is undignified,” and called on the political representatives in that region to prioritise the issue.
Mensah-Williams urged the community to make sure that leaders are held accountable, when a point was raised that political leaders have been coming to Tses over the past years and have been listening to the problems they face, but not providing solutions.
“It is not the first time that political leaders are coming to ask us about our challenges or what we struggle with, they do that but never bring solutions, why not bring the solutions or at least give us feedback,” one young person questioned.
Mensah-Williams then advised them to follow up with the regional leadership as it is their right, by holding meetings.
Other issues raised by the community members include that of NamWater which provides water to them only for an hour per day because of the village council’s debt, and tenders that are not awarded to the local people.
The outreach programme is further aimed at educating the public on the mandate of Parliament with special focus on the House of Review, while sensitising the public on topics such as human trafficking and violence against women and children.
A similar meeting is slated for Mariental on Wednesday. – NAMPA
