WINDHOEK, 01 JUN – The high prevalence of litter and waste in Windhoek and settlements in the Khomas Region has become a serious concern and is a major threat to the health of the region’s residents.
This was said by the Governor of the Khomas Region, Laura McLeod-Katjirua during her State of the Region Address in the capital on Thursday.
“We cannot agree more that the outbreaks of diseases we have experienced, like Hepatitis E, this 2017/18 financial year are a direct result of our inability to manage waste,” she said.
The situation is a major threat to the region’s reputation as an international tourism destination.
According to McLeod-Katjirua, the cleanliness of Windhoek was a factor that all tourists used to admire and remark upon.
“This is no longer the case and is an issue that requires our attention,” she added.
The governor also said she is pleased that Cabinet has approved a National Solid Waste Management Strategy, saying it will improve the overall management of waste so that Namibia can become the leading country in Africa in terms of standards of waste management.
However, McLeod-Katjirua said she is also concerned about the number of cases of environmental degradation brought to her attention during the 2017/18 financial year.
The illegal sand mining operations that are carried out at the settlements of Groot Aub and Aris are some of the concerns in the region and the governor urged miners to use legal means to carry these operations out.
Illegal hunting is also prevalent in Khomas, McLeod-Katjirua noted.
She warned would-be perpetrators that fines and penalties to this effect were recently amended in Parliament.
