Man drowns in Okavango River while washing blankets

RUNDU, 27 Apr – A 43-year-old man drowned in the Okavango River on Wednesday at the Shikenge village in the Kavango East Region.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Head of Public Relations, Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi said in a media statement issued Thursday the man went to the river to wash his blankets, but was allegedly overpowered by the strong water current and drowned in the process at around 17h00.
His body was recovered and his next of kin were informed.
Investigations continue.
In an unrelated incident, a 46-year-old male teacher of the Omuntele Combined School allegedly committed suicide at the Okaluwa village in the Omusati Region on Wednesday.
Kanguatjivi said the deceased, identified as Veiko Nangombe, was found hanging from the roof of his sleeping room with a rope around his neck by his sister at around 15h00. A suicide note was found at the scene.
His next of kin were informed while police investigations into the matter continue.
On Thursday, the body of a baby girl was found in a rubbish bin at the corner of Independence Avenue and Tugela Street in Wanaheda, Windhoek.
Kanguatjivi said the baby was discovered by a man who was searching for empty bottles in the bin at around 11h00.
Investigations are ongoing.
