REHOBOTH, 13 OCT – A 34-year-old Namibian man died instantly in a crash on the road between Maltahöhe and Helmeringhausen on Thursday after he allegedly lost control of the vehicle he was driving.
Namibian Police Force’s crime investigations coordinator in the Hardap Region, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay told Nampa on Friday the incident happened between 16h00 and 17h00, approximately 27 kilometres before Maltahöhe.
“It is alleged the driver of a white Toyota Hilux double cab who was travelling towards Maltahöhe lost control of the vehicle and it left the road, overturned and killed him instantly and seriously injuring the passenger,” Clay said.
He said the driver was trapped in the vehicle and the ‘jaws of life’ had to be used to remove the body.
The passenger was rushed to Mariental State Hospital.
The deceased driver was identified as Matheus Uukongo, and his next of kin have been informed of his death.
The police are investigating a culpable homicide case.
In another incident in Mariental, a train accident was reported to the Mariental police at about 05h30 on Friday morning after a white Toyota single cab pick-up failed to stop at the railway crossing opposite First National Bank and was bumped by a passenger train of TransNamib carrying 13 people.
He said both drivers were tested for alcohol, but tested negative while two passengers were injured, but are in a stable condition.
A case of reckless and or negligent driving was opened.
