KEETMANSHOOP, 19 SEP – The Office of the Governor in the //Kharas Region will host a football and netball tournament this weekend to select players for regional teams for both sports.
Eight football and netball teams from the seven constituencies in the region will take part in the competition.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s office said the aim of the tournament is to create an annual opportunity for the two sports codes to select regional teams to compete in inter-regional, national and international sporting events.
“It also aims to address the social ills in the region and create opportunities for the youth to showcase their talent and develop healthy lifestyle,” it said.
The statement added that over the years, the prestige and performance of team sports like football and netball in the region have declined and this has had a knock-on effect on the performance of all the selected representative sports teams in the region.
“The sporting strength of the region lies in its constituencies and it remains an ongoing challenge to assemble all seven constituencies at a given platform to select proper representative regional sports teams,” it added.
The winner in the football category will receive N.dollars 10 000 in cash, a floating trophy and 20 gold medals.
Runners-up will walk away with N.dollars 5 000 and 20 silver medals.
The third-placed team in the competition will walk away with N.dollars 2 500 and 20 bronze medals, while the top goal scorer will be rewarded with N.dollars 1 000.
The netball winner will receive N.dollars 4 000, a floating trophy and 20 gold medals. The runners-up will walk away with N.dollars 2 500 and 20 silver medals, with the third-placed team getting N.dollars 1 000 and 20 bronze medals, while the overall best player will get N.dollars 500. – NAMPA
