WINDHOEK, 25 JUL – Kenya is keen on deepening bilateral relations with Namibia as the two countries are both driven by the ideology of Pan-Africanism, Kenyan Cabinet Secretary and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Monica Juma has said.
Briefing the media on her courtesy visit to State House on Wednesday, she said the two countries’ relations are historical, however there are opportunities that need to be expanded on for the benefit of the people of the two countries.
“We have just agreed to host a joint commission meeting in Kenya in due course to further explore how we can strengthen our relationship,” said Juma, who handed over a letter from Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to President Hage Geingob.
She further said Namibia and Kenya’s relationship focuses more on the health and education sectors, but there is interest in expanding it to the fisheries and agriculture sectors.
Juma said Kenya fully supports the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), adding that small countries will greatly benefit as they will be able to access goods and services from the most competitive point on the continent without inhibitions.
“It is important for Africa to become self-sustaining in order to drive the free trade, hence the deepening of relationship is important for regional integration,” she noted.
The AfCFTA is a trade agreement between 44 African Union member states aimed at creating a single market followed by free movement and a single currency union.
It covers five priority sectors – transport, communication, finance, tourism and business.
