RUNDU, 27 MAR – The Kavango West Under-19 netball team head coach, Monica Naibas said her team will be going to The Namibian Newspaper Cup as underdogs, but hope to fight past the group stages.
Kavango West have been drawn in Group A against Khomas, Otjozondjupa and Kunene at the upcoming 18th edition of the popular Newspaper Cup slated for Katima Mulilo from 30 March to 02 April 2018, which will include netball for the first time.
In an interview with Nampa on Monday, Naibas said since the region is new and does not have a netball league yet like, they will be going to the competition as underdogs with a lot of unexperienced players.
“We have been drawn in a tough group, but our aim is to come out second in the group, which will make us reach the quarter-finals,” she said.
Naibas said they have done their homework as far as preparation is concerned, adding that the players have been training alongside the regional football team to ensure that fitness is maintained.
In addition, to help the players who lack exposure, the team travelled to Rundu over the weekend where they trained on a standard netball court and had a couple of friendly matches to test their tactics.
The netball tournament, which is supported by Nedbank Namibia, will see the winning region walk away with N.dollars 25 000 and a floating trophy, while the runners-up will get N.dollars 12 500.
The team that finishes third will walk away with N.dollars 6 250, while the fourth-placed team will receive N.dollars 3 125.
The Kavango West team is comprised of Clementine Hausiku; Johanna Likuwa; Regina Hausiku; Theresia Menders; Siyaka Sophia; Raulinda Adelinus; Anna Mutuku; Anastasia Kamati; Rachel Sitentu; Christine Sikerete; Virginia Ndango and Theresia Mbambi.
